In the heart of bustling Mumbai, OUR LADY OF HEALTH CHURCH at CAVEL is set to host its much-loved annual event, the “Pet Blessing Sunday”. What started as a small, intimate ceremony years ago has grown into a cherished occasion for pet owners across the city. At the center of this heartwarming tradition is Father Joe D’Souza, affectionately known as Fr. Joe, who has been blessing pets for over 30 years.
Fr. Joe’s love for animals has always been a significant part of his life. “I’ve always had a soft spot for animals,” he shares. “Whether it was my childhood in Byculla, seminary days, or time in Goa, I’ve always had pets around. Praying for them felt natural.”
This year’s Pet Blessing Service is set to take place once again at OUR LADY OF HEALTH CHURCH at CAVEL, and it’s already marked on the calendars of many pet owners. As Fr. Joe explains, the event is about much more than tradition—it’s a spiritual moment for both pets and their owners. “For many people, pets are like family, and it’s natural that they want their pets to be blessed,” says Fr. Joe. “Pets reduce stress and even improve health, especially for the elderly. I think that’s why so many people seek this blessing, particularly those with older or sick pets. It’s their way of giving back to these animals who bring so much joy in their lives. In an era of fragile bonds and rapid divorces pets often act as catalysts in strengthening relationships within couples.”

The event is a mix of spiritual reflection and joyful memories. Fr. Joe fondly recalls, “Once, before the service started, two dogs—a German Shepherd and a Doberman—kept barking at each other. Just as things got concerning for the owners especially, a parrot began mimicking the owners, saying ‘shut up!’ repeatedly until the dogs finally quieted down. It gave everyone a good laugh.”
While dogs and cats are the main attendees, Fr. Joe has blessed more unusual creatures, including an injured vulture. “All animals are part of God’s creation, and they all deserve our care and prayers,” he says.
Despite its growth, Fr. Joe emphasizes that the event’s focus remains on its spiritual purpose. “It’s not about attracting a crowd or creating a buzz. It’s a space where pets, like all of God’s creatures, can receive divine protection,” he explains.
Fr. Joe encourages pet owners to attend with open hearts. “This isn’t a competition or pet show. It’s about showing gratitude for the love your pet gives and returning that through a blessing.”
Logistically, Fr. Joe emphasizes that there’s no entry fee for the event, as it’s not a fundraising occasion. “This is purely about love and blessings, not about money. We’ve arranged parking at Barretto School ground nearby, and I just ask that visitors be mindful of their pets and parking,” he adds.
As the Pet Blessing Sunday approaches, excitement is building. For many in the community, it’s not just another day on the church calendar—it’s a day filled with joy, reflection, and gratitude for the special connection between humans and their pets. Fr. Joe’s unique service has become a beloved tradition in the city popularly known as “Pet Blessing Sunday” that continues to spread love and kindness, reminding everyone of the importance of caring for all of God’s creatures.
Ultimately, the Pet Blessing Sunday is about more than the blessings themselves—it’s about what they represent. “In blessing these animals, we honor their place in our lives and in God’s creation,” Fr. Joe says. “It’s a moment of peace, joy, and togetherness.”
